Cardiology

Our pets occupy such a prominent place in our hearts that it’s important we look after theirs. Northside Veterinary Specialists provide specialised cardiology services for cats and dogs, as well as ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and exotic animals.

Our Northern Beaches vet hospital is equipped with modern imaging equipment to investigate, diagnose and monitor cardiac issues, with the facilities and staff to provide all manner of treatment.

With the latest equipment and a focus on tailored, compassionate care our team treat a wide variety of referred cases on site, including emergencies and urgent referrals.

We are dedicated to providing the best treatment we possibly can for every cardiology case.

Specialist Vets in Cardiology

Canine and feline cardiology are highly specialised areas of veterinary care. Cardiology specialist Dr Rita Singh leads our cardiology services, supported by a team of hospital vets and nurses.

Dr Singh is the only registered veterinary cardiologist in NSW and is experienced in providing surgical and interventional procedures including pacemakers and correction of certain arrhythmias.

Common Symptoms of Cardiac Issues

Cardiac and respiratory issues in dogs and cats can be present from birth (congenital) or related to age, illness, injury and other natural degenerative causes.

The most common symptoms we see in our Sydney vet hospital are:

  • Arrythmia (abnormal heartbeat)
  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Appetite loss
  • Heart murmurs
  • Aversion to exercise

We also provide pre-anaesthetic health checks to ensure your pet is fit for surgery.

NVS CPD Night

Cardiac and respiratory issues require prompt attention to ensure the best chances of recovery. As some of these symptoms can be related to other health issues it is vital your pet is referred to a specialist vet for accurate diagnosis.

Investigation & Ongoing Management

NVS provide in-depth consultation to referring Sydney vets and referral clients. Often we are able to begin diagnosis on-site in your regular vet’s clinic.

To properly diagnose and monitor cardiac issues in dogs, cats and other animals our Terrey Hills vet hospital is fully equipped with medical imaging equipment including:

  • Echocardiography (ECG)
  • Ultrasound suite
  • Digital radiography
  • Video fluoroscopy (real-time x-ray)

Using non-invasive diagnostic equipment, we are able to consult with you and your vet and advise on a treatment plan. Some cardiac issues in dogs and cats may require surgery and ongoing monitoring, where others will be treatable with medication, rehabilitation or other measures.

NVS has the capabilities, expertise and facilities to provide these services, including pacemakers and other surgical therapies.

We treat patients presenting with any cardiac and/or respiratory issues, including (but not limited to):

  • Congestive heart failure
  • Congenital heart disorders
  • Degenerative heart disease in dogs (e.g. myxomatous mitral valve degeneration)
  • Pericardial diseases
  • Dilated cardiomyopathy
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • Feline arterial thromboembolism
  • Arrythmia
  • Falling, fainting and difficulty breathing

Age and illness are often the biggest contributors to cardiac and respiratory issues in cats and dogs. However, if your pet is presenting with any symptoms of possible cardiac issues it is important to see your vet immediately, regardless of your furry friend’s age or otherwise good health.
